Starting Something

Have you ever told yourself, “I don’t feel like doing (fill in the blank) right now. I’m going to wait a little bit until I feel like it.” Exercising, cleaning, catching up with a friend, learning a new language, starting a new habit; I can think of a million times I’ve let a thought slip past with a half excuse like, “Well, I should do this other thing that’s more important.” Mhmmm… sure it is.

My dad and trail guide for life, Tim Colman, gave me some wise, but hard to hear advice: You can’t always wait until you feel like doing something when you know you need to do it. If you feel called to practice guitar, turn off your screen and get to it. Now is the only time that exists. Stagnation is a sticky place and when you take one step outside your comfort zone, the whole world opens up around you.

After weeks of daydreaming that I would feel inspired to leave my cozy nest of a home to connect with wild and wonderful people in this new city, reality sunk in. I needed to change first and then I would feel like changing. If the change wasn’t working, I could change again. (I like to give myself lots of permission to make mistakes and change directions because it helps me get started and that is the hardest part.)

Sooo… I reached out to a yoga studio I knew from their sister studios in Seattle and asked if they would like to partner with me to host a free + open meditation circle in Portland with the goal of creating a safe space for community building + meditation practice. They said “YES!” and about four other opportunities presented themselves to me immediately. I was honestly flooded with joy. When it rains, it pours.

Do you see the Ebb + Flow in my experiences? The key to realize is that we can’t be flooded with joy all the time, nor can we sit in our shallow indecision and fearfulness all the time. Life is all about balance and finding what suits you best.

What do you want to start more than anything? Can I help you get started?

If you live in the Portland area, I would love to invite you to my new meditation circle starting October 4, 2018 and running weekly on Thursday Evenings from 7:15-8pm. Bring a friend, get cozy, and let’s all slow down together. We will be meeting at The Grinning Yogi - PDX on Division street.

Our schedule will consist of a short introduction, guided breathing, and silent meditation.

If you haven’t downloaded my breathwork guide, it will be available until the end of the month in my shop for free! Go check it out!
